UPCOMING: Roam, Garage Gallery, Walthemstow, London - 19-21st and 26-29th September 2025

Roam is a contemporary painting exhibition rooted in our shared practices of walking, exploring, and recording the landscape. Over the past nine months, we have each spent time travelling, working, and undertaking residencies across the UK. Our exhibition at Garage is the culmination of sketches, plein air studies, and writings, all developed into larger, considered paintings.

We have spent time in Wales, Scotland, and the Isle of Man, with each of us beginning the process of image-making on location, immersed in the landscape. In these moments of stillness, we ground ourselves within nature, and begin to unpick the mass of visual information we are surrounded by. The separation between ourselves and the environment slips away as a result of working outside for weeks on end. We research each location—whether it be the local geology, ancient woodlands, stone circles—as a means to learn about and engage more meaningfully with the places we aim to depict.

A series of watercolor, paintings, drawings and photographs have informed the development of larger heavier refined oil/ acrylic paintings for our show at Garage. We each find importance in colour, mark making and pattern within our works, using these visual tools to bridge the figurative and abstract. Our paintings are recordings of our experiences, memories and the fun we have being ourselves amongst nature.

Garage is a non-for profit community gallery space in the heart of Walthamstow Village. We’re delighted to return and exhibit our work in this space, and to connect with local visitors and fellow creatives in Walthamstow.

A group exhibtion by artists Octavia Madden, Millicent Evans and Toby Wills-Hart
